We are living in Hollywood’s Comic Book Age, where superhero movies are seen by hundreds of millions of people. This has become a global obsession and superhero movies is the most consumed story in human history. But some people ask this question as to why are people everywhere obsessed with these stories so much? One good explanation can be people turn to heroes during hard economic times. For example, the character of Superman has emerged in 1938 as America was climbing out of the Great Depression. Comic book writer Mark Millar has commented that good economic times mostly signal the death of superheroes, and bad economic times have seen a surge in their popularity. As we can see that Superheroes had a huge fan following in the thirties during The Great Depression. People used to get entertained through it.

Jerry Robinson is the creator of the iconic villain “Joker” and he has said that as we are going through a bad time, we are looking for heroes. Because in our hard times' superheroes shows us virtue when we have lost it in our real world. In superhero movies, we find justice that we could not find in the real world. Superhero movies also deal with death and loss and this creates a sympathetic reaction in the audience. Superheroes also have many traumatic experiences in their lives. But there is a certain strength and morality in their character which allows them to overcome bad past experiences in life and to do good in the world.

But this superhero tradition is not new in western culture as all the superhero stories have descended from Greek and Roman literature and modern superheroes are the continuation of that tradition. One cannot help but be inspired by superheroes. They exhibit righteousness and moral principles. In today’s world full of evil and misfortune we still rely on superhero characters for their virtue that has conquered both villains and their own weaknesses and they give us a tint of hope in this frequently dark world.
